Wow, finally caught up with this, brilliant writing as always Rob! I'm actually a bit jelous of all the good players you have, in my own German save, I've been a Bundesliga fixture for 5 years now, and for the last two seasons I've been embroiled in the title battle, finishing 6th in the end both times, and I'm not even close to getting a player as good as the ones you have, in fact my top German talent isn't even in the NT radar, haha. What are the save's plans for the future? Do you want to keep growing HSV and get them to win the UCL? Or do you envision a shift to another team in the future? Maybe take up the German National Team?
Cheers!

After a fairly long interlude...real life getting in the way and then me playing different saves... Season 7 - could it be the one where we finally return to the top? With 3 games to go it looked entirely possible:- But those final 3 games, we made something of a mess of it, again. And so continued the "bridesmaid" save this was starting to feel a lot like.

Bayern's Muscle
A couple of seasons back I was remarking on how topsy turvy the league had been in this save. I'd expected a dominant Bayern side but hadn't encountered one. Something very significant happened though on this game date: 09 / 04 / 2022
That is the date when Jurgen Klopp became Bayern's manager and he has clearly turn the ship around.
At the start of this save Bayern's points totals slipped into the sixties. For context they should be capable of 80 points or higher as you'll see by their history below. But their standards had slipped, take a peak at their wins column and also the goals scored column. And I recall this post (or part of post) that I made about the Jurgen Klopp effect at Bayern Munich. You'll notice below that in my season 8 which was 2025/26 his impact continued...devastatingly. I've read about and experienced saves where Liverpool (under Klopp) become this FM juggernaut and this seemed to be happening here only with Bayern. Klopp just went 4-zip on me in this one. I don't have a lot else to say about this season. Its around the time I briefly stopped playing as Hamburg and other events interrupted. Season Nine, 2026/27, my 9th at this club will be different, yes, it will. When I post about that then I'll just about be caught up.

Summer Deals Pre-Season 9By season 8 I had decided the my fullbacks were an issue. We'd so disappointingly lost Vagnoman and consequently anyone decent in those positions. I'd bought Abderrazak Messaoudi for what seemed (at the time) big money but he alone could not be the final jigsaw piece as both left side and right side needed addressing. Although he prefers left he's very capable from the right but who could take the other role? Enter Felix Babbel. A German wingback from Real Madrid at a cost of £96m. Ludicrous. A figure that shatters every record. Ozan Kabak (central defender, Turkey) also joined for a fee more than £40m in a push to drive quality, experience and give us a better back line. On paper they did but in reality we didn't concede any less goals. Note the books were not too far from balancing. I sold Mersini £56m, Obradovic £60m and Escalante £43m. One way or another things would be different. Tactic Landscape Season 9, Part OneFor the 1st half of the season things changed tactically. I basically went a little bit Pep with inverted wingbacks and a bunch other roles and instructions that would have us playing fancy football. I had 2 or 3 such tactics allowing me to incorporate certain players in their best role & position and it was all a bit too clever. Rarely does FM play optimally when you chop and change, bring players in/out and look to be all smart with micro management. More often it is better to find one good (tactical) idea, with a simple premise and stick to it with everyone familiar and most of the team unchanged but consistent. The cleverness part was how we went until midway, and to be fair it kept us thereabouts but the 2nd half of the season was more straightforward and better for it. Part Two (Tactics)I have a tactic which is a 4141 that I use in a couple of other saves. It is based on how I think Solskjaer tries or has tried to set up Man Utd at certain points in 2019. It is fast and furious counter attacking football. I made a post about this tactic on SI forums months ago, and it is basically this tactic that I used exclusively in the 2nd part of season 9. The Hamburger boys lapped it up. There is nothing too fancy happening on the flanks. It isn't concerned with overlaps or forwards tracking back. Beyond building from the back there is no short or slow passing, nor are there any playmakers involved in a build up process. The Mez gets a lot of room as the players ahead gamble on getting in behind and do not readily come back and get in the way, leaving room in which the Mez finds space. We win the ball' transition fast and move faster. With good players, more so with good, speedy players it is absolutely lethal, incisive counter attacks. Season 9 - the actual seasonIt had to happen sooner or later. All those near misses and then that spending splurge with key squad changes. Then finally adding my no-nonsense rapid style football tactic we started crunching teams and making a run that not even Klopp's Bayern could hold off. The cup would follow in its footsteps. When I look at our stats over all the seasons the 9th one doesn't particularly standout for goals or goal difference. What it had though was wins. Drawing a lot less and losing fewer. A tactic and a team that was all about the results. An overdue championship winning team. Perseverance finally paid off and rather than capping this save with an ending it's actually an impetus for me to get going again with HSV. Now I've decided to go with that particular tactic I intend to make sure the squad has the right personnel for it. Not many changes needed but always growing, evolving and pushing for the next level. That level would be both league and Champions league together. New goals to shoot for.

What Exactly Does £96m Buy You?Felix Babbel - A fairly professional, elite fullback with moderate passing abilities . Someone who wants £175k per week, has played for Germany over 50 times by the age of 23. And whose physical attributes are somewhat chart topping. He has great anticipation, decisions, concentration and positioning. Basically this someone that is in the right place at the right time and if he isn't then he has all the pace and agility to correct himself in no time at all. For more of a midfielder or winger you may want someone more technical, however for a fullback, pretty good.

10th Season. Squad ReviewIts been a while since I've reviewed the troops like this. As I return to this save, the updates, and arrive at my 10th season all at the same time, it seems an opportune moment. The policy initially had been to mainly stay German in our scouting and acquisitions but not exclusively. Looking for players with potential but who in most cases haven't played many games. Ones whose path at their club has become blocked and who are in need of a bit of first team football which we're offering. Typically these players are around 20 years of age. Things change over time. The above has been adhered to sometimes and largely ignored at others. With the 4141 ready and waiting how do we look? Keepers
Max Schelotto is entering his 8th season with us. I guess you could say he has been a great signing. 58 caps for Argentina supports that idea. For the most part his position has been unchallenged seeing off backup after backup. Now though he has a challenge. A slightly younger keeper called Panda who is already a 4.5 star keeper in his own right. Panda is still learning German and settling into the club. Long term I doubt I will keep both happy. For now this is a position of absolute luxury. Fullbacks
When your two starting fullbacks cost you a combined £135m give or take then it should be a strength. Both Babbel and Messaoudi are also 4.5 star players. Elite and miles ahead of backups who are not exactly there yet. I'm position training a winger called Japeri on the left and he will be very attack minded whilst an academy graduate called Koch (unfortunate) learns his trade on the right. My only concern here is the drop off from starters to backups. Elite to below average and its noticeable in games. Have to be a tad careful when I rest the main guys. Centre Backs
Pleased to report that the main central defender is Lutz, a German international that we stole from Bayern's youth setup years ago. His partner for now is Ozan Kabak (not a regen) who has been solid for us. Backing up and pushing is Dane, Allan Bukhave who I think will climb over both soon. Further depth doesn't really exist here so a youngster would help. Instead I tend, if required, to a midfielder who can play the position. As a department its good but the weakest mentioned so far. Wide Men
This is a work in progress. Fiete Arp is inside forward from the left and an iconic player at the club. He's accomplished and could get better. This is another lease of life for him at Hamburg and I'm backing him to be valuable to us for a good while longer. Backups for this position are a bit wild. I'm position training 2 or 3 for this spot and will see who comes out where. At least two are very young and raw and I would be uncomfortable if Arp were to be out for any long period. On the right I have Matias Alderete a two-footed natural for the spot. Alderete is very good but not great and that's fine. It'd would be freakish to have a worldy at every spot. Now his backup are interesting. By right it should Jauk, an academy graduate but a bot lightweight. However I have a young forward thats trying to forge into the team somehow. Name is Herrera and he is only just becoming "unconvincing" in this spot and yet his attributes are flying and he's getting goals when he plays. Herrera just might be the most exciting prospect we have. Engine Room
This is pretty strong. Not many people are completely natural at their position but there is so much coverage in this group for all the midfield roles. Zico normally holds. He is another "elite". He'd get in pretty much any team. Then there is Hansel (mentioned previously in this thread). A favourite of the manager. Should be an AMC but tends to play the MEZ role. Gets goals, wins games and performs consistently high level. The box 2 box is Ndombele. Signed recently as 30 year old and still ideal for that role. Also have Ayyouch, in his 7th season but maybe our most unsettled player at the moment. Kinoyan a young Russian who is hard to manage and give me red card headaches, a reckless player. Finally there is Kolodziej that similar to Hansel but younger, has very high potential I think. Strikers
Three very good ones fighting for the same spot. Andre Pereira and Rodrigo Miguel, both 23, tend to share this the most. Pereira I really like. Handled the title run-in excellently and loves to pick the ball up and run at defenders. Miguel on the other hand looks fractionally better attribute wise and is deadlier in front of goal. He is the best goalscorer we have and is dragging scouts from the world's best clubs everywhere he goes. Expecting a monster bid for him at some point. Lastly there is Dylan Munro. A Scotsman signed from Rangers. He is youngest and least experienced of the three but already a wonderkid.

Maybe take up the German National Team? I'm sorry this reply is rather later but thanks for looking in and posting. The plan as far as I can see is some repeatable success in Bundesliga with this team and make us prominent Champions League team. Beyond that I'm not sure.

Come on Rob! This is an amazing save. I'll give it to you that it isn't the kind of challenge I've submerged myself in my own save, but you've done brilliantly, specially on the transfers side of things. You've got so much quality at your disposal I'm a tad jelous. Keep it up mate.

Season 10 - midwayThings are going well this season so far. All too easy in FM to get a hangover after winning a title but nothing obvious to date. Results wise we've looked the best team with Bayern fairly slow to get into gear. We suffered a shocking 1-4 loss to Freiburg that I never saw coming. The league's main players are coming from us with one notable exception, Maxim Verstraete at Bayern. Last year's top scorer, a superb Belgian complete forward who alone will alway s keep Bayern competitive. Miguel figures in the mix for us and as I said he is a lethal finisher. Alderete also shows up and that is remarkable as he is heavily rotated, fair play to him.
Good position for us to attack second part of season. We also won our CL group but money is running lowish, plus I'm expecting offers on my players this window.

Winter Window. Small is Sometimes Big.- Bayern agree to sell Verstraete, to Real Madrid.
- HSV buys a transfer listed midfielder, Georgiadis, from Bayern.
- Man Utd attain Ayyouch in a straight swap deal (most unusual) with us for Vagnoman.
So Bayern lose the leagues most prolific striker and what I saw as their best asset. They then transfer list Georgiadis for £21m, a player I could previously get nowhere near. Then my midfield is re-balanced as I offload the unsettled Ayyouch for club favourite Vagnoman in a straight swap, all is forgiven where he is concerned.
What a tidy little window, in my eyes.

HSV versus BayernSounds dramatic but this is practically where this save has reached and that's not really overstated. They've transfer listed this guy and I've picked him up.
He has been under played so may improve. A 6 foot 5 beast of a midfielder. Are you kidding? All over it.

Season 10 CompletedFirst up this season itself before a bit of a 10th anniversary review.
A pretty comfy season and a title retained, as was the Cup, BACK TO BACK DOUBLES. Unfortunately we lost a ding dong Champions League semi final to Barcelona. One leg was 3-3 and the other 2-3, both were amazing games that went one way then the other. Our goals conceded in the league, 31, is a little high but we scored 85. I think with this crop of players and tactic we'd be described as entertaining. Bayern took a small step back and as per previous posts I think they made a couple of mistakes in the transfer market. Dortmund are always there or thereabouts and surprised most when they best Barcelona to win the Champions League. Player StoriesWith Pereira a bit injury plagued it was up to lethal striker Rodrigo Miguel to carry more workload and he was at his clinical best. In the summer I had a bid for him from PSG for over £150m but instead he has signed a new deal with us. In total he has scored 74 goals for HSV in 117 games. Fiete Arp had his best season since I brought him back to the club. He set a new high average rating and scored 25 goals in all competitions. 28-years old now and an iconic player for the club. My 3rd mention is the expensive wing back Felix Babbel. A tremendous contributor for us also with high ratings and leading the way with the most assists. Transfer NewsJust had another good window for us. Good mainly because we kept hold of everyone that I wanted to. Could easily have had some issues as there are now some players that could go anywhere for big money. Managed to keep them, add some prospects plus a couple of medium big deals:- Mohamed Benamara for £25m from Leverkusen. A quality central defender. This tactic requires some players to lock the back door. Isaia Bertoncini for £32m from Juventus. All purpose midfielder, someone who can play the box to box role and rotate with Ndombele. Alberto Scotta (free) from Juventus. Model citizen whom its hard to understand why Juve would let leave. An attacking midfielder which is not a need but I'll work out what to do with him. Save RecapThe recent titles and 10 year tenure have seen me become a club legend. I have a 61% win record, overseen 914 goals scored by us and have collected 8 pieces of silverware. Despite a period of constant 3rds and 4ths we have just about risen to the top domestically, the media identifies us 1st as do the bookies...and recently I've come to view it similarly. We have a clear tactical identity and a squad now built around that vision. In the squad currently we have 8 players described as a wonderkid, 7 as elite, 1 as commanding and 1 as world-class. 10 players have a valuation of £50m plus. It has been a good save and the above paragraph correctly spells out that we are currently very strong, stronger than any point previously. Hopefully that now means some sustained success.

Little PPM Nuances I Have Picked Up
There is probably little new here for anyone who reads all the guides or who applies greater depth than I do to the player development side of the game. But have picked up some little tips of my own some which are maybe only be more apparent as I side gets very good.
Shoots With Power. This is not good for a polished technical finisher like Rodrigo Miguel and it has been removed from his game. It inhibits deft, subtle finishes that his technique will bring out.
Knocks Ball Past Opponent. Have gone right off this PPM. It is for a player that is quick but not great at dribbling. Basically kick the ball past them and race for it. This would be a poor idea IRL for someone like Messi who likes to dribble with ball glued to his feet. Consequently I try to avoid this for my inverted forwards as I don't want to cut inside and knock the ball toward the DMC or central defenders. It may be slightly better for a winger perhaps.
Get Stuck In / Stays on Feet. A huge factor here is bravery. Your coaches will encourage you to let brave players dive in and timid players stay on feet. I still look at tackling with this one too (sometimes my coaches ignore that and there are brave players who can't tackle).
Speaking of bravery, it is also linked to Attempts Overhead Kicks. Again it seems to be a PPM suitable for brave players.
Runs With Ball Rarely vs. Brings Ball Out of Defence. These would appear to an either / or. My defender Allan Bukhave can not be trained to bring the ball out of defence, it is not an option given yet it is for my other central defenders, The difference? Bukhave 'runs with ball rarely'.
Get Forward Whenever Possible. I play my outer defenders as Wing Back - Support. I would suggest this is a very good PPM for that role.
Plays One-Twos. This may work for a few roles and I'm going to suggest ones that shuttle up and down the pitch potentially on a support duty (not defend duty). Box to box midfielders always seem capable of being trained in the art of this.
Obviously there are loads more of these and I should write them down instead reeling off the top of my head like this. I'll add half a dozen or so more in a later add-on as I remember or come across them.

I've never been too bothered with getting players with new PPM's, I might take a look during this offseason. I've always figured that the Plays one-twos PPM would be great to have in your fullbacks/wingbacks and in your inside forwards/wingers so they can get a bit of a combination passes during wing play trying to get the FB/WB to overlap.

Niggles & DoubtsJust ahead of the next mid-season I'm jotting down half a dozen fringe concerns. - Pereira and Georgiadis both seem injury prone this past year. The former is just susceptible and Geo can't always come back from one injury before another.
- A few are becoming peripheral. I worry about Perez and Munro. Neither really take the chance to shine when it's given.
- Holger Walter is my biggest single worry. Signed him as a 20 y/o not long ago, an Inside Fwd. He's not 'all that' in the game but he insisted at contract negotiation on being a key player. Didn't like that considering where HSV is at compared to him in but foolishly pressed ahead. Instantly made him squad rotation but he moans like hell about not playing. I think we are going fall out pretty quickly.
- Squad is slightly too big at the moment. At least a couple of players too heavy.
- The keepers, it's becoming a juggling act for me to keep both Schelotto and Panda happy. My own fault.
- Scotta. Mentioned last time. Great business for us on a free signing but literally where do I play him?

Midpoint Stats Season 11League: Won 15; drawn 1; lost 1. CL: Won 6; drawn 0; lost 0 Cup (inc Super Cup): Won 3; drawn 0; lost 0. All competitions: Scored 75; conceded 11. Miguel is scoring at over a goal a game and Pereira is not far off a 100% ratio too. We hit 18 straight wins at one point and we are close to dominant...but we have won nothing this season, not at this point. Lets see what the window brings.

Nice work - must feel good to get some consistent success. Who doesn’t love a 96m Fullback!!! You can’t loan Scotta out for a season? Then sell or integrate him? Thanks Ian. I certainly don't believe FM money is real money. If it's there then ivariably it'll get spent. Was dear though wasn't it? I tackled some problems but not all in the window. Scotta is is the 'not all' part. Still have him but your ideas make a lot of sense. Walter was sold, no messing about. Only 6 months at the club but I smelt a problem that I didn't like. I also shifted Perez for comparatively peanuts. He may well gone on to be a good player so arguably a mistake to not even include a sell-on fee. I'll keep my eye out for him later. Bigger news was another outbound. Barcelona whacked in an eye-watering £125m bid on Zico. It was a bid that I chose not to negotiate, it was to be a straight yes or no. I spent time trying to find if a replacement existed out there and found Ahmet Avci at Tottenham with a release fee. Zico had better mental attributes; Ahmet the better technicals. The deals would cancel each other out and I went with it.

Season 11 - Another TitleDon't be fooled by the upcoming screenshot as this season wasn't close. We finished sloppily in all honesty but we were only giving away a huge lead we had built up. A final day loss to Bayern gives them added respectability. This provided us with a hat-trick of Bundesliga titles. The stats briefly show that almost predictably Miguel led the scoring and even weighed in with double figure assists. He's a great lad too who never gives me any trouble when I turn down bid after bid for him from PSG. The team as noted recently is ridiculously strong and getting to the Champions League semi-final stage must soon be regarded as a minimum. This year we were losing finalist as FM decided to play out one of its not so realistic penalty shootout games, we lost 7-8 on pens as you can see.
Player NewsI've allowed my keeper, Schelotto, to leave. Positional rival, Panda, has won him out and retaining both was never on the cards. Eventually Schelotto would have kicked off. It's another big move but they have become common place now for us as we compete in the higher echelons of the transfer market these days. It is more difficult to find players of the required standard when that level is so high. Next season looks no different in that we should be in the frame for every competition we enter.

Little Tactical Nuances I Have Picked UpI'm a fairly big fan of the game's tactical presets in this version, you know the ones, Tiki-taka, Gegenpress, Fluid Counter-Attack etc. I don't know how many people use these either as they are, tweak them, or follow them as some sort of guide. Maybe they are largely ignored, I don't know. I have regularly seen people on SI forums say they are fine but need various adjustments to work properly but then never properly explain what those adjustments are. Anyway, I'm going to contend you don't need to make many adjustments at all on what they provide. You simply need to know how to set up your team around what they give you. I'm going to pick out a pretty simple one, Control-Possession. All of the team instructions and especially those highlighted need one thing to help them. Your team fluidity should be Fluid. To achieve a Fluid side you need to increase the number of support roles in you team. Around six support roles should be enough. Your team will now be set up in a shape that works for a short passing game and is also close enough together to push up and press as a collective group. Simples .

Congrats on the title Rob, shame on the UCL final though, PSG is a bitch. Regarding your tactical pointers, I used the presets a lot while building my TeBe side, I figured as we were a low individual quality team, by playing a tactic 100% we'd be stronger. And to an extent we did, as we played a possession game perfectly, dominating the 2 Bundesliga possession charts with a far inferior team to the standard of our rivals. When the squad became more talented, I started doing my own tactics from scratch, by selecting the "clean slate" tactical style and creating my own, using my "knowledge" of football and the game engine. The season I'm currently at is the first season where I've had 100% preset freedom, and it's worked like a charm (no spoilers, you'll have to read it on my thread, hopefully I'll post during the weekend).
Keep it up!

PPM Nuances Part II
Comes Deep to Get The Ball this is good for players that have poor off the ball movement.
Look For Pass Rather Rather Than Attempting to Score. Passing is pretty good but finishing is poor.
Tries Killer Passes. Basically this is more through balls. Good passer obvious but think player needs natural creativity too i.e. a bit of flair.
Tries Long Range Free Kicks. Combination of free kick taking and long shots.
Moves into Channels. Needs good anticipation to read the game well on when to move.

I have posted here a bit less recently. To tell the truth I haven't even bought FM20 and I don't think I'm going to. I might weigh in with another '19 exploit though as I still play that.
