Just playing around with FM21 now (FM20 keeps crashing on my older laptop due to a lack of memory, so I'm trying FM21 on my new Macbook) and by chance* Volendam were my opponents...
I've played a bit of FM21 before and having just spent a lot of time on FM20 I can notice some immediate improvements in the match engine (the glorious first-time assist for the opening goal here being a prime example), so assuming I can get some measure of consistency in my performances and results I am far more positive and optimistic about this version than I have been before.
* I don't believe this is chance at all. I usually set Volendam as one of my favoured clubs and over the many saves I have started (and then abandoned) over the last couple of years, we face Volendam with a degree of regularity that I reckon is highly unlikely.

On previous attempts, I could barely string a decent move together, let alone win a game...

I only see 3 seconds of the FM20 loading screen match. No match highlights. 5-0 is impressive though!

This is just bizarre. I've tried FM21 a number of times before and struggled badly. So badly in fact that I was beginning to feel like it was an entirely different game from FM20. So this time, I decide to start with Forest with the main goal being to see how long I can go before getting sacked. And yet, here we are: I don't know how long it will last, but I thought I would shout about it while the going was good!

PS. I'm well aware that having spent the last 12+ months grumbling about FM21, suddenly loving it because I've strung a few wins together makes me a raging hypocrite. We'll see what my final opinion is when my save hits March.... 😁😁

So, in the interests of openness, this is how it finished: Form definitely dropped off after the winter transfer window - at that point we were about 15 points clear and at one point in the spring it was less than 6 if memory serves. We also had a really good youth intake. Had we stayed in the Championship a couple of these would be getting minutes off the bench in the second season.
The summer transfer window has been interesting and I think I can see that I have already made a couple of potentially save-ending mistakes. Basically, as I was treating this as a free hit and not expecting to win the Championship title at the first time of asking, I concentrated more on trimming the bloated squad than identifying targets, which has meant that I went into the summer virtually blind. I've then managed to upset a few players (refusing to sell them, not including them in the still massive squad... etc.) which has seen morale plummet and now we're conceding silly goals when last season we kept clean sheets in over 50% of our matches. The board only want me to fight bravely against relegation, so potentially we could go down and I keep my job but I don't know if I could face another 46 match slog.
Also, after my initial enthusiasm for FM21, I've calmed down somewhat. I still like it, but I'm not sure it's quite the huge step forward from FM20 that I thought it was (though maybe that's just because I've started losing again ). The recruitment meetings are useful but still really click-heavy. I'll keep going with this save for the time being but I'm less pumped about it than I was.

The 46 game slog in england can be a right mental block once you have sampled 34s and 30s of european leagues?
Germany is probably best league to try if you wanna sign english players due to germany rep and finances along with relaxed rules too.
But congrats on promotion and title with forest.
I recall in 21 or 20 getting Peterborough to EPL with a thin squad and surviving by skin of my teeth.
I believe you can with forest do the same

Thanks Jawzy. Funnily enough, my other league of choice was Germany but I was having a hard time deciding on a club and the Forest save was just too tempting. I'd like to keep going with it due to the quality of the newgens but that maybe out of my hands before too long! I know I've buggered the recruitment slightly and I'm not making a good job of making us hard to beat so we're in for a long season.

Thanks Jawzy - at the moment I'm undecided between the usual build/re-build a smaller club or take over a Bundesliga side, and my two options are Hansa Rostock or Werder Bremen. Union Berlin are interesting too though...

Thanks Jawzy - at the moment I'm undecided between the usual build/re-build a smaller club or take over a Bundesliga side, and my two options are Hansa Rostock or Werder Bremen. Union Berlin are interesting too though... Easy choice, Rostock Rostock are the heavy favourites, but I have days where the thought of battling my way to two promotions before I get the pleasure of being disemboweled by Bayern is just too much for me to face and instead I reload my Volendam save, rack up a couple of big wins and go to bed content.
What I really should do is make a definite decision about the FM21 Forest save, then create the save with Rostock and (crucially) start posting about it on here to make me accountable to someone else to keep playing and posting.

I can't remember a save I've ever done where Bayern dominate after 3/4 season in. I tend to see Leverkusen and Dortmund becoming the Celtic / Rangers of Germany and Bayern playing for third. One of FM's many nuances / mysteries

After a lengthy break, I picked up my FM21 Forest save again over the last couple of days. We were rock bottom with about 7 points and unable to stop conceding, so I didn't hold out much hope. However, a complete tactical overhaul (taking a system I'd used in FMT17 and merging it with one from a prominent YouTuber) saw a something of a renaissance on the banks of the Trent and this is the result: Mathematically safe with three games to go! Tottenham are having a bizarre season. Their squad still looks pretty strong (we're only in the second season!) and they're League Cup winners, but they're almost certain to go down too. As for us, I'm pretty happy with the defence, but I think I could upgrade everywhere else this summer. My key areas will be a creative central midfielder, a deep-lying playmaker type, an Advancved Forward and probably a goalkeeper if possible. All rests on how much money the board give me.
PS. I also need to sort out the scouting/recruitment side of things. I've mentioned it before but this is a major weakness of mine, so a more coherent plan is needed, rather than me rushing out and splurging money on mediocre signings.
